What it’s like

Weekly performing arts, ballet and tots classes in Sheffield, plus themed birthday parties for the stage-mad crowd.

This is a classes setup rather than a one-off show, and the age range says a lot: they take walking toddlers in the Tots Classes right up to 18 and 19 year olds in NPA Theatreworks youth theatre. In between there's ballet, general performing arts sessions, and NPA Academy for the 8 to 18s who want more than an hour a week. If your child is genuinely into dressing up and performing rather than just tolerating it, this is built for them.

The session lengths tell you who each class is for. Tots gets 30 minutes, which is about right for that age's attention span. The performing arts classes stretch to 60 or 90 minutes, and NPA Academy runs a full 2 hours, so that's clearly aimed at the older kids who can actually sit through a proper session. Prices climb with the time: £21.50 for Tots up to £54 for the Academy, paid by direct debit rather than per session, which is handy if your child sticks with it but a bit of a commitment if you're not sure yet.

That's where the free taster session earns its keep. You register for your preferred venue and try before you commit to a direct debit, which takes some of the risk out of it. Worth knowing that places do fill up and there's a waiting list, so a taster this month doesn't guarantee a spot starting next month.

Beyond the weekly classes there are holiday clubs across the school year and birthday parties with proper themes, princess, pirate, superhero, musical theatre and mini disco among them. If your child's birthday wish list is "can we do a show", this is one to look at.
