What it’s like

Fifteen rooms of minibeasts to peer at, plus hands-on bug handling and a go kart track to burn off the rest of the visit.

This one's about getting properly close to things with too many legs. There are fifteen visitor rooms of minibeasts to work through, tropical houses with scorpions, vinegaroons and centipedes, and a night zone where the nocturnal insects come out to do their thing. The bug handling sessions are the bit worth building your visit around, stick insects, millipedes and cockroaches on offer, but they're time-specific and limited, so it's £2.50 on top of entry and booking ahead is the sensible move rather than hoping for a walk-up slot.

Outside there's a go kart track and a sandpit, plus an undercover sandpit for when the Norfolk weather does what it does. There's a soft play pillow to jump on too, so a rainy Wednesday isn't a write-off. Entry is £14.50 for an adult and £12.50 for a child aged 3 to 15, with under-3s in free, which feels fair for a day that mixes indoor animal-watching with outdoor running about.

The Chrysalis Café does breakfasts through to cakes with vegetarian and vegan options, and it's got a 5-star hygiene rating if that sort of thing reassures you. One catch: on weekends and school holidays you can only eat food bought on-site in the café, so a packed lunch needs to wait for a picnic table outside instead. Birthday parties are bug-themed with a handling experience built in, starting at £150, and they'll let you bring your own cake.

It's wheelchair accessible throughout with accessible toilets, and there are autism quiet hours if you email ahead to arrange one. If you're relying on the bus, the X29 runs between Norwich and Fakenham but the nearest stop is a good 20-minute walk along main and country roads, so a car makes life easier here.
