What it’s like

Petrol go-karts on a 450m indoor track, laser tag, and a Mini Racer session for the small ones who aren't tall enough yet.

This is proper petrol karting, not the electric bumper-car version, on a 450m indoor circuit built for racing rather than pottering. Kids need to be 8 and up, 1.2 metres tall with a 25 inch inside leg, to drive one themselves, which rules out a lot of primary schoolers straight away. If yours is younger, the Mini Racers experience covers 4 to 7 year olds between 1.0m and 1.4m tall, so there's still something for the smaller ones while the big kids queue for the real thing. There's laser tag too, from age 6, which is the easier win if your group's got a mix of ages and not everyone's tall enough for a kart.

Family sessions let a parent and child race together, and that's the only time an adult can be on track without a child alongside them. Under 16s need an adult with them the whole time, so don't plan on nipping off for your own race while the kids wait it out solo, someone has to stay put. Worth knowing before you book: it's a proper dress code, no headscarves, no heels, no jewellery under the suit, all down to safety in the karts, and you'll need a balaclava too, £3.99 on the day if you haven't brought your own.

Food's sorted with a Fuel Bar doing vegetarian, vegan and halal options plus the usual soft drinks and shakes, and there's alcohol for the grown-ups if you fancy a pint while you watch. You can't bring your own food in though. Parking's free on site and it's a quick run off the M74, about ten minutes from the city centre.

Booking's essential, not optional, and they take full payment upfront. That part stings a bit if plans change, because it's non-refundable and there's a £10 per person fee to move your slot unless you've paid for the flexible option. Spectating's free if you just want to come and watch someone else's birthday party or a mate's stag do without racing yourself.

Plan your visit

What age can actually drive a kart?

Eight and up, and they need to be 1.2 metres tall with a 25 inch inside leg. Check your child measures up before you get their hopes up, because the Mini Racers session for 4 to 7 year olds is a different, gentler thing.

Can my younger child do anything?

Mini Racers covers ages 4 to 7, as long as they're between 1.0m and 1.4m tall. Laser tag's an option from age 6 too if karting's a no.

Do we need to book ahead?

Yes, and they take full payment when you book, there's no turning up on spec. Slots are limited so book before the day you want, not the morning of.

Can parents and kids race together?

There are family sessions built for exactly that. Outside of those, adults can't just jump on a kart without a child racing alongside them.

What's this about a dress code?

No head coverings, scarves, heels or jewellery under the race suit, it's all down to safety once you're strapped into a kart. You'll want a balaclava too, bring your own or grab one there for £3.99.

Can I leave my child racing while I watch?

Under 16s need an adult with them at all times, so someone's staying put rather than heading off to do their own laps.

What if I need to change or cancel a booking?

It'll cost you, bookings aren't refundable or transferable and there's a £10 per person fee to amend unless you've added Flexi-book protection when you booked.

Is there parking?

Free parking on site, and there's disabled parking close to the entrance too.

What's there to eat, and can I bring my own?

The Fuel Bar does food with vegetarian, vegan and halal options, plus soft drinks and alcohol for the adults. No outside food allowed in though.
