What it’s like
Free rhymes and stories for the under-fives, plus shelves of books to browse, in a Glasgow library open six days a week.
This one's built around Bookbug, the drop-in sessions for babies, toddlers and children under five. It's rhymes, songs and books rather than a sit-still-and-listen affair, and there's no booking, you just turn up. Spaces are first come first served though, so if you've got a session in mind it pays to get there in good time rather than rolling up at the last minute.
Outside of that it's what you'd expect from a library, and that's not nothing: thousands of books to pick through, somewhere warm and dry to sit with a toddler on a wet afternoon, and nobody minding if you're in there twenty minutes or two hours. There's wifi too if you need to get anything done while they browse.
Opening hours stretch to 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is handy if mornings are chaos in your house. The rest of the week it shuts at 5, and it's closed all day Sunday. Free entry, obviously, and there's a baby change and an accessible toilet on site.
One thing worth knowing: there's no car park attached, so you're relying on street parking or walking in. And if anyone in your crew wants to use the public PCs, that needs booking ahead rather than just sitting down.
