What it’s like

Free Bookbug sessions, songs and a stack of picture books, with no booking and no charge to walk in.

Bookbug is the reason to time your visit here. Songs, stories and rhymes for babies and young children, run as a session rather than a browse, and the site is upfront that spaces are limited and first come first served, so turning up five minutes before it starts is a gamble on a wet Tuesday.

Outside of that there's the usual run of a library, thousands of books to pull off the shelves and a Digi-PALS service if you need a hand with anything digital while your toddler ignores you completely. It's free to get in, which takes the pressure off a visit that overruns or one where nobody actually wants a book that day.

Hours are decent for a library, two late nights until 8pm on Tuesday and Thursday if the school pickup routine means mornings never work. There's step-free access, an accessible toilet and baby change on site, and it's dog friendly if you count assistance dogs, though other animals aren't allowed in.

The one faff is parking. There's no on-site car park, so if you're coming by car you're relying on the street, and that's worth building into how long you think the whole trip will take with a buggy in tow.
