What it’s like
A free, quiet library above the gallery with Bookbug sessions for under-fives and step-free access to every floor.
Bookbug sessions are the main reason to bring a small one here, rhymes and stories aimed at babies, toddlers and under-fives, and it costs nothing to get in. Outside of sessions there's still a decent stock of books and learning resources to browse, so it works as a rainy afternoon filler if the gallery downstairs has already been done.
It's a proper library rather than a soft play, so don't expect much beyond books and a quiet room. That's the appeal if you've got a toddler who needs somewhere calm rather than another noisy attraction, but it might not hold a seven-year-old's attention for long.
Getting there is easy if you're on the train, Queen Street is two minutes away and Central is about nine minutes on foot. There's no car park on site, just paid meter parking on the street, which is a bit of a faff if you're juggling a buggy and a toddler in the rain. Every floor is step-free with a ramp and lift, and there's a hearing loop, baby change and accessible toilets.
Opening hours shift a bit through the week: it opens at 11am on Fridays and Sundays rather than 10am, so check which day you're going before you plan around nap times.
