What it’s like
A proper pottery studio in Sheffield where teenagers and adults can try throwing on the wheel or slabwork, then paint what they make.
This one's for older kids, not the younger ones. Throwing on the wheel is only open to age 13 and up, which the studio is upfront about, so if you've got a ten-year-old desperate to have a go, it isn't happening here. Slabwork, on the other hand, has no age limit mentioned and looks like the friendlier option anyway: rolling out clay, pressing it into moulds, then painting whatever comes out the other end. Coasters, a soapdish, a bowl, even a little wall picture, and the site says people's imagination never fails to impress.
A one-to-one taster lesson is £50, or £55 a head if you go as a group. If you fancy getting properly into it, a set of lessons totalling 5 hours runs at £140 solo or £120 per person in a group, and there's a Super Experience session at £125 a head for 4 hours if there are two or more of you. None of this is pocket-money stuff, but a single taster session at £50 to £55 is a fair chunk of a day out for a teenager who actually wants to make something rather than just look at it.
The bit worth knowing before you go: you don't take your creation home on the day. Everything gets fired twice, and the studio emails you when it's ready to collect, usually 4 to 5 weeks later. That's a long wait if the whole point was a birthday gift, so plan around it rather than hoping for an instant souvenir.
If something goes wrong in the kiln, the studio says cracked pieces get repaired or you get another lesson free, which is a decent bit of reassurance for the price you're paying. Gift vouchers are available too, valid for 2 years, either posted or downloaded for a last-minute present.
