What it’s like

Pick a pot, slap on the paint, and take home a mug or bowl that's properly yours, no kiln skills required.

You turn up, choose a blank piece of pottery off the shelf and get stuck into painting it. That's the whole idea here, and it's a good one for a rainy Saturday when you need something calmer than a soft play but still messy enough to feel like an activity. Mugs, bowls and novelty items are the popular picks, starting around £15, though plain pots start from £9 if you want to keep costs down.

Sessions run for two hours, which is plenty of time for most designs. If your table's empty for the next slot they'll let you carry on a bit longer, but don't bank on it if someone else has booked in after you. Leave a pot unfinished and you can come back another day to finish it off for £4 a head, which is a fair way to handle it rather than rushing a five-year-old's masterpiece.

Booking's recommended, especially on Saturdays, and you do it by phone, text or email rather than online. The studio's shut Thursdays and Sundays, and twice a month they run Friday evening sessions from 8:30pm for adults only, so that's one to avoid if you're bringing the kids. There's pram storage, a baby change and high chairs on hand, so it's not a bad shout even with a little one in tow, though you'll want an activity that suits older kids too since painting takes patience.

They also do children's parties, up to 15 painters at a table, and groups of 8 or more can book flexible times outside the usual slots. Average spend works out around £15 to £20 a head once you count the paint and the pot, which is worth factoring in before you commit to the fanciest novelty item on the shelf.
