WHERE

London

What it’s like

A London restaurant and gallery spread over several rooms, with set sittings for afternoon tea, lunch and dinner rather than one big open-house menu.

This isn't a venue with a play area or a schedule of kids' activities, it's a set of dining rooms with a strict timetable. The Gallery does afternoon tea most days and dinner every evening, the Glade does breakfast, lunch and a late bar, and the Lecture Room & Library does a proper lunch and dinner sitting on top of that. If you're thinking of taking a child along, it's the kind of sitting-at-a-table-and-behaving occasion rather than somewhere they can wander.

What decides your visit here is the clock as much as anything. Breakfast in the Glade starts at 8 on weekdays but not until 9 at weekends, and afternoon tea in the Gallery runs later on Fridays through Sundays than it does Monday to Thursday. Dinner sittings shift about too, the Lecture Room & Library goes from 19:00 on Friday and Saturday but starts half an hour earlier midweek, so if you've got a set idea of when you're arriving, it pays to check which room and which day you're aiming for.

There's no booking link listed here, which is a bit of a faff if you like everything sorted in advance, and no prices given either, so you'd want to have a rough figure in mind before you commit a family outing to it. What you do get across the different rooms is proper food service rather than a café counter, cafe and restaurant both listed among what's on offer.

Given the late bar hours in several of the rooms, some of this venue clearly tips into evening adult territory once dinner service ends, the Glade and Parlour bars run on past midnight some nights. For a family visit you'd be looking at the earlier daytime sittings, breakfast or afternoon tea, rather than trying to fit around the later bar slots.

Plan your visit

Is there a kids' menu or play area?

Nothing like that is listed, it's set up as dining rooms with sittings rather than a space with activities for children.

What times can we go for food?

It depends on the room. The Glade does breakfast from 8am weekdays or 9am weekends, and the Gallery does afternoon tea from 11am or noon depending on the day.

Do we need to book ahead?

There's no booking link given, so you'd want to sort that out yourself before turning up, especially for a specific sitting.

Is it OK to bring a toddler for afternoon tea?

No age range is given, so it's really about whether your toddler can sit through a table service tea rather than anything the venue has ruled in or out.

What food is on offer?

There's a cafe and restaurant, with breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner all served in different rooms depending on the day.

How long does a visit take?

Sittings are timed rather than open-ended, lunch in the Lecture Room & Library runs 12 to 1.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, for example, so you're working to a slot rather than lingering all day.
