What it’s like

Monthly history talks at Jubilee Hall for £1.50 to £2 a head, no booking needed, plus guided walks around Enfield.

A monthly talk at Jubilee Hall is the usual way in: an hour or so of local history in a hall at 2 Parsonage Lane, with no need to book. Non-members pay £2 at the door for the Historical Association talks and £1.50 for the Enfield Archaeological Society ones. It's cash, and it's the sharpest bit of the whole thing. Join for £5 a year and talks and walks are free after that.

The walks are the other half of it. Heritage walks and guided walks, usually reachable by public transport rather than by car, so read the details for each one before you commit. There are litter picks too if you want to do something rather than listen to something, and those often suit an older child who's happy to be out for a couple of hours.

Older children who'll sit through a talk will get something out of it, and the walks are easier going for a curious eight or nine-year-old than a five-year-old. It's a society rather than an attraction, which means quiet rooms, a newsletter four times a year, and no café to fall back on. Members get the monthly emails and the colour newsletters, which is the real reason the £5 pays for itself if you go more than twice.

Worth knowing: the Charity School in Edmonton isn't normally open to the public, so don't plan a visit round it. Group bookings are possible if you're organising for a club or a class.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

£2 at the door for the Historical Association talks and £1.50 for the Enfield Archaeological Society talks if you're not a member. Both are free once you've joined.

Do we need to book?

Not for the talks. You turn up and pay at the door. Check the details for each walk, since those are organised differently.

How much is membership?

From £5 per person per year. That gets you four colour newsletters a year and monthly news emails, and talks and walks free.

Where are the talks held?

At Jubilee Hall, 2 Parsonage Lane, Enfield EN2 0AJ.

Can we get there without a car?

The talks are at Jubilee Hall and the walks are usually reachable by public transport. It's the usual way people get to them.

Is it any good for a young child?

It's talks in a hall and guided walks, so it suits a child who'll sit and listen. There's nothing set up for toddlers.
