What it’s like

Tumble Tots, Hartbeeps sensory sessions, kids' cooking and dance classes run in a hall you book by the room, with free parking out front.

Picture a hall and a manor house in Borehamwood that mostly rent out rooms, and the kids' activities that run inside them. Little ones do Tumble Tots, which is climbing, balancing and coordination, or Hartbeeps, the sensory music sessions for babies and toddlers. Slightly older children get kids' and family yoga on Magic Mats, COOK STARS cooking classes, hip hop with Vanessa Class, and ballroom and Latin. There's abacus maths too, plus post-natal yoga with Gabby for the grown-ups, and We Move She Moves fitness for all ages.

It's a booked-room setup rather than a drop-in day out, so the first question is which class and which slot, not what's on when you arrive. Parties get the same treatment: Hartbeeps run multi-sensory musical parties, and there are party rooms if you're organising something bigger. Rooms open from 8am, and you can usually buy extra set-up time from 8am, occasionally the day before, which takes the stress out of decorating before everyone turns up.

Food is bring-your-own, and that's the bit worth knowing. There's no in-house caterer, but you can use the kitchen to heat food or make drinks, and you can bring alcohol with no corkage. Guests use the gardens too, which helps on a warm afternoon. Music has to stop half an hour before your booking ends, and guests need to be gone by the end time. Sunday to Thursday the building closes at 11pm, Friday and Saturday at midnight, with extra hours sometimes available if you ask.

Parking is free and generous on site, and it's about 20 minutes from London. The whole place is step-free with a ground-floor accessible toilet, and it's pet-friendly. Set-up time is part of your booking, so the room is yours to arrange rather than a corner of somebody else's party.

Plan your visit

How do we book?

By phone or by calling in to speak to one of the managers at Allum Manor. They help you fill in a booking form, and a 25% deposit confirms it.

What if we have to cancel?

More than six months out, you get half the deposit back. Between three and six months, half comes back only if the date is rebooked. Under three months, the deposit isn't refundable.

How late can we stay?

The building closes at 11pm Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Extra hours beyond that may be possible if you ask.

Can we bring our own food and drink?

Yes, and there's no in-house caterer, so it's bring-your-own by default. You can use the kitchen to heat food or make drinks, and there's no corkage on alcohol you bring.

Can we get in early to set up?

Rooms can be accessed from 8am and set-up time is included in your booking. You can buy extra hours from 8am, sometimes the day before.

Where do guests park?

Free parking on site, and there's plenty of it. No charge and no permit needed.

Is it accessible for wheelchairs and buggies?

Yes. It's step-free with ground-floor access and an accessible toilet, so pushchairs and wheelchairs both manage fine.

Will another party be in the hall at the same time?

Usually only one booking uses the hall at a time. If there are multiple bookings, they're agreed in advance.

Can we bring the dog?

The venue is pet-friendly, so yes. Worth mentioning when you book if it's for an event rather than a class.

Can we use the gardens?

Guests can use the gardens, and there's outdoor play space. Handy if you've got children who'd rather be outside between courses.
