What it’s like

A theology college that opens its lectures, chapel and Saturday open days to visitors, with rooms from £35 a night if you want to stay over.

This is a working theology college in Northwood that lets the public in for its lectures and events. The one people travel for is the annual Laing Lecture, and there are research seminars and conferences through the year too, plus weekly chapel, prayer and worship that visitors can join. Open days run on Saturdays with a campus tour and a student panel, which is the version to pick if a weekday doesn't work for you.

It's aimed at adults, and most of what's on is bookable in advance rather than a turn-up-and-see affair. The open events are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, so a Saturday open day is the one to aim for if you're fitting this round a job. Online open events run for an hour, with a two-minute overview of each programme, which is a low-effort way to see whether the place is for you before committing to a trip.

If you want to stay, rooms start at £35 a night for a single with a shared bathroom, or £42 for an ensuite, room only. Full board is £330 and £370, and they knock the weekly rate down if you're staying four weeks or more. Meals are priced per item, £2.50 for breakfast and £6 for lunch or dinner, though the campus kitchen closes some weeks and you'll need to eat elsewhere then. Library access is free while you're resident, and non-residents pay a low visitor rate.

The campus shuts completely for two weeks over Christmas, so plan around that. Applications take several weeks to process before they reach Admissions, and if nothing on the events list suits, you arrange a visit by email. It's a quiet, studious sort of day out rather than a family one.

Do I need to book?
