What it’s like
An over-18s games bar in York where you book lanes for duck pin bowling, crazy pool, tech darts or shuffleboard and settle in for the night.
This one's strictly for the grown-ups. Roxy Ball Room runs on a Challenge 25 policy and under-18s aren't allowed in at all, so leave the kids elsewhere and treat this as a night out with mates or a slightly competitive date.
Once you're in, the choice is the fun part. Duck pin bowling and crazy pool (a mash-up of crazy golf and pool) sit alongside tech darts, shuffleboard, ping pong and an ice-free curling rink, with a batting cage for anyone who fancies swinging for it. Off-peak prices start at £8 a head for most games, though the batting cage jumps to £48 an hour and ice-free curling is £32, so it pays to check what you're booking before you commit a whole evening to it. If you can't pick just one, the Mix & Match options let you try two or three activities for £18 or £24 a person, which feels like the smarter way in if you're a group that can't agree.
Food runs to American-style pizzas, burgers, wings and sides, with a full bar doing cocktails, draught beer and mocktails for anyone driving or just pacing themselves. It's card only throughout, so don't turn up expecting to pay cash at the bar. Gaming tables are worth booking ahead online since walk-ins only get a spot if there's space, while drinking tables and beer pong are more first come first served.
Dress code is a small faff worth knowing about: sportswear, football shirts and joggers aren't allowed in. Fancy dress is fine as long as it's tasteful. Opening hours stretch late on Thursday to Saturday nights, running past midnight, while Sunday wraps up earlier at 10pm.
