What it’s like
Locked in a themed room with your team, racing the clock to solve puzzles and find a way out.
This is a proper escape room, not an arcade with a name that sounds like one. You and your team get shut in a themed room and have to work through puzzles against the clock to get out. If you don't crack it in time, staff come in, tell you how far you got, and let you out, so nobody's actually trapped forever.
It suits older kids rather than little ones. The minimum age is 8, and every team needs at least one adult over 18 in it, so this is one for a family group or a birthday outing rather than a toddler afternoon. Solving the puzzles as a team is the bit that sticks, and it rewards a group who'll actually listen to each other rather than everyone grabbing at the same lock.
Booking ahead is essential, not just recommended, though they say you can sometimes get a same-day slot if you call to check. Arrive 10 minutes early and give your booking name, no need to print anything. Turn up late and you can still join if your room hasn't hit capacity, but if it has, you're locked out of the lock-in, and cancellations inside 72 hours of your slot aren't refunded or changed, so it pays to be sure of your time before you book.
It's right in York city centre, opposite Clifford's Tower, and there's pay and display parking behind the tower itself rather than anything on site. One thing to flag if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair: the building's up one flight of stairs with no lift, and even the two rooms without steps or crawl spaces aren't fully accessible.

Plan your visit
What age is this suitable for?
Eight and up, and every team needs at least one player over 18.
Do we need to book in advance?
Yes, all games need booking ahead. Same-day slots are sometimes possible if you call to check.
What happens if we're running late?
You can still join as long as the room hasn't reached its maximum capacity, and you pay on arrival. If it's full, you'll need to call about another room, so it's safest to arrive 10 minutes before your slot.
Can we cancel or change our booking?
Bookings are non-refundable, and no changes are offered within 72 hours of your start time. Get in touch by email as soon as you can if plans change.
Is there parking nearby?
No parking on site, but there's pay and display parking behind Clifford's Tower, just along the road.
Is the venue wheelchair accessible?
The building is up one flight of stairs with no lift. Two of the rooms have no steps or crawl spaces, but full accessibility is limited.
