WHERE
York
What it’s like
An hour locked in a puzzle room in the middle of York, hunting codes and clues as a team of two to six.
You get sixty minutes to search every corner of the room, piece together clues and work out how they unlock the way out. It's built for teamwork rather than raw brainpower, so a team that talks to each other and splits up the searching does better than one genius trying to crack it alone. Staff keep an eye on things throughout and you're free to leave whenever you like, so nobody's actually trapped, whatever the puzzles want you to feel.
The recommended age is 10 and up if there's an adult with the group, or 16 for teams without one, though the site notes younger kids have taken part too. Any child playing counts as part of your team size, and they reckon three or more gives you a decent shot at escaping. Teams run from two up to six people, and the more of you there are, the cheaper it works out per head.
It's stairs-only to reach the rooms, so there's no wheelchair access, worth knowing before you commit to a slot. Booking's required, and they're strict about it: no refunds once you've confirmed, and a £20 fee if you reschedule within 72 hours of your start time. On the day itself they can't take cards or cheques either, so if you're wandering into York city centre and fancy a spontaneous go, you'll need to sort payment another way.
It sits at 4a Colliergate, right in the city centre, an easy walk from the Castle and Nunnery Lane car parks and about fifteen minutes from the train station. An hour's your lot in the room.
