What it’s like

A residential activity centre where groups climb, canoe, build rafts and try a man-made caving system over a stay of a few days.

This one's built around groups staying over, not a single afternoon trip. Think school trips, youth groups, birthday groups of 8 to 16 or bigger parties who ring ahead. Once you're there the list of things to get through is properly varied: indoor climbing wall, high ropes, archery, bouldering, a man-made caving system, canoeing and raft building, plus way marked walks if you want something calmer between sessions.

Sessions run 1hr 45mins to 2 hours, with the shorter Spotlight sessions closer to an hour, so a full day fits in two or three activities without anyone getting bored halfway through. Each group gets its own self-contained accommodation, mostly bunk rooms with ensuites, and girls and boys sleep separately. Bedding's provided, which is one less bag to pack.

Food is straightforward and filling rather than fancy: cereals and toast for breakfast, filled rolls and crisps for lunch, a proper main and pudding for dinner. Kids can bring pocket money for the shop, sweets and drinks are reasonably priced, though don't expect wifi access for them since the centre keeps that for group leaders and teachers only.

It's wheelchair accessible, with instructors used to adapting activities around individual needs, and staff are DBS or PVG checked. If you're not sure what you're booking into, you can arrange a site visit first and someone will walk you round the accommodation and activity areas, as long as you call a day ahead.
