What it’s like

Gorge scrambling, coasteering and white water rafting out in the Brecon Beacons, booked as a group and priced from £40.

This isn't a turn-up-and-play sort of place. You're booking an outdoor adventure session, mostly out around the Brecon Beacons, and what you actually do is scramble up gorges, jump off rocks into pools, abseil down crags or climb 30 to 60ft faces with a guide leading the way. Coasteering adds cliff jumps and swimming through the sea, and if you fancy something less vertical there's white water rafting, surf kayaking or a full bushcraft day building fires and shelters.

None of this is a pushchair-friendly afternoon. It's scrambling, crawling, jumping and swimming through rivers and gorges, so you want a child who's a confident swimmer and steady on their feet rather than one still finding their balance. Gorge scrambling runs to about three hours, white water rafting a bit shorter at roughly two and a half, and by the end everyone's soaked, muddy and probably still talking about the waterfall jump.

Groups of four or more need to book ahead, and six or more can just ring up rather than filling in a form. It stings a bit that coasteering starts from £40 a head and the open gorge scrambling and canyoning event is £55, but you're getting guides and kit for a proper half day out, not an hour on a climbing wall. Light rain apparently just adds to the fun, though they'll reschedule if the weather turns properly nasty, and most of these activities sit 30 to 60 minutes outside Cardiff.

If you're after a big group celebration rather than a family outing, this is clearly built with stag parties in mind too, with fancy dress welcomed and pub recommendations on tap if you want to make a weekend of it.

Do we need to book?

Groups of four or more must book ahead. Groups of six or more can book by phone instead of using the online form.

It's scrambling, jumping and swimming through rivers and gorges, so it suits a confident, capable child rather than a toddler or younger one still unsteady on their feet.

How long does it take?

Gorge scrambling runs to about three hours. White water rafting is a bit shorter, roughly two and a half hours.

What happens if the weather's bad?

Light rain doesn't stop play and they say it adds to the fun, but severe weather may mean rescheduling your session.

How far is it from Cardiff?

Most activities take place 30 to 60 minutes outside the city, largely around the Brecon Beacons.

Can we build our own itinerary for a group?

Yes, they'll mix and match activities to suit your group and can add extras like wild camping, so it's worth telling them your group size and what you fancy.
