What it’s like

Quad bike treks across rough terrain, plus clay shooting and archery, for kids eight and up who fancy something proper outdoorsy.

This is quad biking as the main event, not a five-minute go on a track. You pick your trek length: the 1.5 hour Quad Adventure Trek at £68 a head, the 2 hour Monster Quad ATV Trek at £95, or the full 2.5 hour Mammoth trek at £125. Groups of 10 or more get a small discount on all three, which is worth knowing if you're already thinking about a birthday group. For an eight-year-old that's still a serious chunk of time on a quad bike, so it suits kids who are confident and steady rather than ones who'll want to bail after twenty minutes.

Alongside the quads there's clay target shooting, priced by how many targets you want to shoot at: £35 for 15, £50 for 25, or £70 for 40. There's also an hour of archery at £43. Both feel like the sort of thing to add on if the quad trek alone doesn't fill the day, or as a lower-key option if you've got a mix of ages and not everyone wants to be on a bike.

Everything has to be booked ahead, no turning up on spec, and they want you there 20 minutes before your slot so they can run through the briefing while you're still stood by the car. Bring warm, waterproof gear and proper footwear, though if you haven't got the right kit they'll hire it out. Food is only sorted for groups of 7 or more, booked in advance.

It's on the Cowal Peninsula, which means the journey is part of the day: about an hour from Glasgow Airport including the Western Ferry crossing at Gourock, or a bus and ferry combination if you're not driving. That's a fair trek before the trek.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Quad treks run £68 for 1.5 hours, £95 for 2 hours, or £125 for the 2.5 hour Mammoth trek, with a bit knocked off for groups of 10 or more. Clay shooting is £35, £50 or £70 depending on how many targets you go for, and archery is £43 for an hour.

Do we need to book?

Yes, everything here is by advance booking. There's no walking in and asking for a slot.

What age does it suit?

The minimum age is 8. Given the trek lengths, it suits kids who are confident on a bike and happy to stick at it rather than younger ones who tire quickly.

What should we bring?

Warm, waterproof clothing, gloves and sturdy footwear. If you haven't got the right gear they'll hire it out to you.

Is there food on site?

Only if you're in a group of 7 or more and book it ahead, things like bacon butties, soup, a buffet lunch or a barbecue. It's not somewhere to rely on for food if you're a smaller family group.

How do we get there without a car?

Buses run from Buchanan Street Bus Station to the Western Ferry for Dunoon every 20 minutes, then the local 489 bus from the ferry terminal takes about 30 minutes to Quadmania.

When should we arrive?

20 minutes before your activity time. Stay by your car until someone from Quadmania comes to find you and run through the briefing.
