What it’s like
Age-banded craft workshops, from felt sewing and dotty mandalas for younger kids to macrame and clothes refashioning for teens.
This is a proper studio setup rather than a drop-in craft table, with sessions pitched by age band so a six-year-old and a fourteen-year-old get genuinely different projects. The younger group makes dotty mandalas, party crowns and felt friends, or builds a fairy or dinosaur garden. Move up to nine to twelve and it's personalising pencil cases, painting wooden dolls, weaving and monoprinting. Teenagers get the more grown-up end of things: refashioning their own clothes, macrame keyrings, collage portraits and canvas painting.
Everything's guided rather than left to chance, which suits a beginner who's never picked up a needle or a paintbrush before. Materials and tools are all provided, snacks and drinks too, and whatever gets made comes home with you. The site's open one level with step-free access, so buggies and wheelchairs aren't an issue getting in.
Booking's required and there's no walk-in option listed, so this needs planning ahead rather than a spur-of-the-moment visit. Turn up more than 20 minutes late without warning and you'll be turned away, which feels strict but keeps sessions running to time for everyone else. Parking's sorted at least: the Brighton Marina multi-storey is free all day and evening, a short walk from the gallery.
If you're after a birthday that's more than soft play and sausage rolls, the kids' creative parties start from £100 and get tailored to the age group and interests, with a guided session, materials and refreshments included.
