What it’s like
Free wander through changing contemporary art exhibitions in a big gallery space just past St Peter's Church.
The main gallery here changes with whatever exhibition is on, showing work from local, national and international artists and organisations. It's free to get in, so there's no pressure to rush round if you've only got twenty minutes before a nap is due, and no ticket to book in advance either. Galleries are open 12 to 5 during exhibitions, which is a narrower window than you might expect.
Ground floor access is properly thought through: a ramp to the left of the main entrance gets you level access to the galleries, workshop rooms and toilets, with baby change facilities on site too. The studios upstairs are a different story, stairs only, so if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair that part of the building is out of reach.
The café is currently closed, which is a shame if you were planning to make a stop of it. Parking is limited: there are a few bookable spaces behind the building, or the London Road multi-storey nearby if those are taken. It's about a ten minute walk from Brighton station if you fancy leaving the car altogether, down Trafalgar Street and past St Peter's Church.
