What it’s like

Workshops in acting, musical theatre, creative writing and screen skills for ages 4 to 19, based at a dedicated theatre venue in Warwick.

This is a workshop and training venue rather than a one-off show. Children and teenagers sign up for terms or seasons: acting groups split by age (4-7, 8-11, 12-19), musical theatre sessions, screen acting with actual camera work, Shakespeare and Young Company, and voice and LAMDA training. Under-fours get their own Sensory Baby Space and preschool theatre sessions, which is a nice touch if you've got a sibling too young for the main groups.

The creative writing strand, Blank-Shift, is worth a mention on its own. It covers poetry, prose, play-writing and screen-writing, and writers occasionally get their work performed at scratch nights with proper actors brought in. It is not cheap: a full season runs to £80 for the 6+ group and £145 for the 10+ or 14+ groups, so this is more of a term-by-term commitment than a drop-in session. Musical Theatre membership for the season sits at £141, which puts this firmly in the "regular activity" bracket rather than a casual afternoon out.

Attendance matters here too. The site is upfront that sessions build on each other week to week, so missing a few will leave a child playing catch-up. If your teenager is angling for the acting industry proper, Playbox also runs an agency, though they are honest that auditions are never guaranteed no matter how good the training.

Café Whirl handles food on site, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and nut-free options and a quieter seating area away from the main tables, plus an outdoor space with role-play environments for a break between activities.
