What it’s like

A five-metre start hill and a proper BMX jump track where you book a session and just ride.

The start hill is the thing everyone talks about here. Five metres up, then you drop in and pick your line through the jump sections below. There are open drop-in sessions if you just want to turn up and ride, plus coaching sessions and slots set aside for juniors and for women and girls, so you're not always jostling for space with the confident regulars.

You'll need to book ahead, either online or through the Better UK app, and it's worth registering for the National Cycling Centre membership since it's free and lets you book up to 28 days out. Manchester residents get up to 30% off too, which softens the blow if you're riding often. Bikes are available to hire if you haven't got your own, which is handy if you want to try it before buying gear.

There's a dress rule that catches people out: shoulders have to be covered, so no vests or triathlon suits unless you've got a sleeved layer over the top. Bring something warm to put on between runs as well, since standing around off the track gets cold fast.

If you're planning a birthday, the party format here is an hour of exclusive track time with coaches followed by an hour in the party room, which gives the kids a proper structured ride rather than a free-for-all. The site's got its own Velopark Metrolink stop and loads of cycle parking, so getting there without a car is straightforward.
