What it’s like

Live jazz and world music in a small Lace Market venue that welcomes families at the right sessions.

This is a proper live jazz room, not a soft play with speakers, so the deal with kids is about timing your visit right. Under-18s are allowed in and family groups are welcome, as long as children aren't disruptive once the music starts. For anyone with kids under 13, the venue itself steers you towards the Twilight session (5 to 7:30pm) or a weekend lunch slot (Saturdays and Sundays, 12 to 4pm), which makes sense: a late Friday "Later" show with a well stocked bar isn't really the one for a nine-year-old.

Babies and toddlers who'll sit on a lap or in a pram don't need a ticket at all, which is a nice touch if you've got a little one who naps through anything. Saturday afternoons are free on the door, while standing for a normal show is £18 and a seat is £25. Dining shows come with the full a la carte Middle Eastern inspired menu and run longer, the Later shows are shorter and cheaper with lighter bites and desserts if you're not after a whole evening out.

There's no baby changing on site, which is worth knowing before you commit to a nappy-aged toddler and a two-hour set. Parking round Hockley is tight and mostly paid until 8pm, so the tram is the easier call: the venue's about 100 metres from the Lace Market stop, and the train station's a 15-minute walk if you're coming from further out.

You won't get the full band-and-bar Friday night experience with kids in tow, but the daytime and early sessions genuinely seem built for it. It's the kind of gig where the music's the whole point, so a fidgety toddler mid-solo is going to test everyone's patience, yours included.
