What it’s like
Ride miniature steam and electric trains round an 800m track in Eaton Park, from £1 a go on Sundays.
The whole point here is the trains. Small steam, electric and IC engines pull you round an 800m dual-gauge track at ground level, or you can try the 5 inch gauge heritage line if that's more your speed. There's a tunnel too, opened back in 2014, and it comes into its own in December when it turns into the Tunnel of Lights.
A single ride is £1 for under-16s and £2 for adults, which is about as low-stakes as a day out gets. If your crew wants to ride more than once, the day pass makes more sense at £4 for children and £6 for adults. It only runs on Sundays though, from 11am, and there's no fixed closing time, so if you want to guarantee a ride you need to be there before 4:30pm. Day passes stop selling in the final hour, which feels like a bit of an odd cutoff but is easy enough to work around if you get there with time to spare.
Babies and toddlers are well catered for, with prams and pushchairs able to travel on the accessible carriage No7, which also takes wheelchair users, guide dogs and accompanied dogs at the volunteers' discretion. That carriage runs on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. Do bear in mind this is a volunteer-run operation, so services can close in bad weather or if there simply aren't enough people on hand that day, which is a fair trade for the price but worth knowing before you build a whole afternoon around it.
If you're thinking of a party, they'll do birthday rides on Sundays, and for bigger groups you can email ahead about chartering a train. There's also a Halloween Special running 4pm to 8pm on October 31st, and the Tunnel of Lights returns in December 2026 for something a bit more atmospheric than the usual daytime run. It's card only, so leave the loose change at home.
