What it’s like
Five thousand years of Dartmoor history in one building, from Iron Age hut circles to Victorian farm life, with a ticket that lasts a whole year.
You wander through Dartmoor's past here, starting with the Iron Age communities who left stone rows and hut circles across the moor, then working forward through medieval life to Victorian times. There are short films along the way with music and interactive challenges, so it's not just cases of old tools to walk past, though there are plenty of those too. It's a lot of history packed into one building, and kids who like a bit of a mystery will get a kick out of the burial cairns section.
A day ticket doubles as a year pass, which is the sort of detail that makes the £6 adult, £4 child price feel less steep. Under-3s go free, and a family ticket for two adults and two kids comes in at £14, so if you think you'll fancy a second visit before Christmas it's basically a no-brainer. School visits and children's groups are £2 a head, and home educators get a family ticket for £9.
It's open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Parking is the one real catch: the on-site car park is small, though Mill Road car park is a short walk away if you need the space. The building itself has a lift to every floor and level access throughout, though anyone with a wider mobility device might find a few tight spots, since it's a Grade II listed building with all the quirks that brings.
If you're coming by train, Okehampton station is about 15 minutes on foot, with hourly services to Exeter St Davids most of the week. Cyclists can pick up the Granite Way, an 11-mile car-free route, right nearby.
