What it’s like

A castle ruin, a loch, a toadstool trail and old WWII gunsites to hunt down on foot around the park.

The main job here is walking, but it's walking with a purpose if you've got kids in tow. There's a proper trail to follow: past Craigend Castle, through Pietches Moor and Pheasants Wood, up to Mugdock Castle itself looking out over the loch. The Toadstool Trail is clearly aimed at the younger end, and Khyber Field adds a bit of history with its WWII gunsites, which is the sort of thing that'll get a few questions out of a seven-year-old.

It's not a set attraction with a start and end time, it's a country park, so you shape the visit yourself. That's good if you want a short loop with a toddler and a buggy, or a longer wander if the kids can manage the distance to the castle and back. The castle ruin is probably the bit they'll remember, especially with the loch behind it.

There's a Visitor Centre if you want to get your bearings, plus a gift shop and a gallery and garden centre to duck into if the weather turns or legs give out. Refreshments are available at the cafes dotted around, which is handy given how much ground you can cover without really planning to.

Nothing here is ticketed or timed as far as the site lists.

Plan your visit

What do kids actually do there?

Mostly walk the trails, past Craigend Castle and on to Mugdock Castle by the loch. There's a Toadstool Trail that seems pitched at younger children, and Khyber Field has old WWII gunsites to look at.

Is it OK for a toddler?

The paths and shorter loops suit a buggy well enough, and the Toadstool Trail sounds built with smaller legs in mind. The walk out to the castle is longer, so pace it to how far your toddler will actually go.

Is there anywhere to eat?

Yes, there are cafes in the park for refreshments, plus a gift shop and a gallery and garden centre if you want a break from walking.

How long do people stay?

As long as you fancy, really. It's a park rather than a timed attraction, so you can do a short loop or make a day of it depending on how far the kids get.
