What it’s like

Book ahead for a falconry appointment where you can either fly the birds hands-on or just watch a demonstration.

This isn't a place you turn up to on spec. Strathblane Falconry runs by appointment only, and from what they say, it's first come first served on the booking, seven days a week. So if you fancy a Saturday slot, get in early with the request rather than assuming you can just roll up.

Once you're booked in, the actual draw is having a bird of prey on your glove, or at least being close enough to watch one properly fly. The site lists a hands-on flying experience alongside spectator demonstrations, so there's a choice between having a go yourself and just standing back with the kids to watch the birds work. That flexibility is handy if you've got a mix of ages or nerves in your group, some of whom fancy the glove and some who'd rather keep both feet firmly on the ground.

There's food on site, which takes the pressure off needing to time a visit around a packed lunch. Beyond that, the appointment-only setup is really the thing that shapes the whole day: no wandering in whenever, no guarantee of a slot if you leave it late, and the whole visit hinges on getting that booking sorted first.

Plan your visit

Do we need to book in advance?

Yes, it's by prior appointment only, no walk-ins. Bookings are taken seven days a week on a first come first served basis, so get your request in early for a popular day.

Can the kids actually handle the birds?

There's a hands-on flying experience on offer, or you can opt for a spectator demonstration if flying a bird of prey isn't for everyone in your group.

Is there food available?

There's on-site food, so you don't need to plan around bringing your own.

Is this a normal walk-in visitor centre?

It isn't. Everything runs on appointment, so this is one to plan ahead for rather than a spontaneous day out.
