WHERE

Glasgow

What it’s like

A free nature reserve on the edge of Glasgow where you walk the perimeter path spotting birds and wildflowers.

This is a spot for a slower kind of visit. There's no play equipment and no gift shop, just a perimeter path you pick up from the Forth and Clyde towpath, with a marsh full of birds to spot and wildflowers along the way. If your kids can manage a decent walk and don't need constant entertaining, it's a nice one to add onto a canal walk rather than a destination in its own right.

It's free to get in and the parking nearby is free too, which makes it an easy add to the day rather than a big outing you have to plan around. There's nothing to buy on site, so bring your own snacks and a flask if you're making an afternoon of it.

Between April and August it's bird breeding season, and the site is clear that dogs need to be kept under close control during those months. Worth bearing in mind if you're bringing the dog along with the kids, since a marsh full of nesting birds isn't the place for an off-lead run about.

There's no play park here and no café to fall back on if the weather turns, so this suits families who are happy with binoculars and a bit of mud over slides and swings.

Is there parking?

Yes, there's free unrestricted parking nearby.

What is there for kids to actually do?

Birdwatching and wildflower spotting along the perimeter path, which you join from the Forth and Clyde towpath. It's a walk more than an activity, so it suits kids who are happy pottering rather than ones after a play park.

Can we bring the dog?

You can, but between April and August it's bird breeding season and dogs need to be kept under close control.
