What it’s like
A neighbourhood gym and sports centre with a 70-plus station fitness suite, games courts and bouncy castle parties on the side.
This one's built around the gym and the courts rather than a soft play frame. There's a fitness suite with more than 70 stations, multi-use games areas for sports, and group exercise classes if you'd rather be told what to do by an instructor than work it out yourself. Bouncy castle parties are the bit that'll actually get mentioned by kids on the way home, booked either in-centre or by phone.
You don't need to book for the gym itself, you just pay on the day or use a Lifestyles membership if you've got one. The group exercise classes work differently: members can pre-book through the Technogym App up to three days ahead, or you can still just turn up and pay. Sports courts can be booked casually too, though you pay at the time of booking, and if you want a block booking for the season that's a case of emailing the centre directly rather than doing it online.
Hours are generous on weekdays, open from quarter to seven in the morning until ten at night, though weekends and bank holidays shrink down to a shorter daytime window. Parking is free, both for cars and bikes, and there's free disabled parking at the rear with its own bays, so getting in and out with kit or a buggy isn't the faff it sometimes is at these places. The Moat House Café covers you for food on site, and access throughout is level with accessible toilets and changing facilities, including a shower seat and wheelchair accessible equipment like arm bikes and cable pulley machines.
