What it’s like
Free entry to a big country park with a farm trail, adventure playground, a fairytale village and Go Ape tree top ropes if you want to pay for more.
Entry to the park itself doesn't cost you anything, which is rare enough these days that it's worth saying twice. Once you're in, the kids can work through the Fairytale Village, the Adventure Playground and the Farm Trail, where there are pygmy goats, alpacas, sheep, Shetland ponies and donkeys to gawp at. There's a train too, and a Wood Vibrations Trail and geocaching if you want to turn the walk into something with a point to it.
If you've got one who wants a proper physical challenge, Go Ape's Tree Top Challenge is here, and that's the bit to save for the end of the day since it needs a bit more energy than the farm trail does. It's not part of the free entry, so budget for it separately.
The car park is where it stings a bit. It's £8.90 for a car, dropping to £5.90 if you arrive within two hours of closing, and there's no getting round it since parking isn't free even though the park is. Last entry is 3:30pm and the park itself shuts at 4:30pm, so don't roll up at four expecting a long visit. Charlotte's Pantry café runs 10:30am to 4pm for lunch and snacks, and there's a gift shop too, though its hours are shorter and change depending on the day of the week.
Wheelchair users and anyone who struggles with a big walk can hire a mobility scooter on site for £5 for two hours or £10 for four, with a £10 refundable deposit, though it's best sorted in advance since it's subject to availability. Disabled parking spaces are limited and first come first served, which is a genuine catch if you're relying on one. Dogs are welcome around the park and there's a dedicated dog play area, Margam Bark, if yours needs its own patch to explore.
