What it’s like
Weekend disco skating sessions with music and lights, £5 including skate hire, no booking needed.
Two hours of skating with the lights down and the music up, Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, three till five. Skate hire's chucked in with the £5 ticket, so if your lot don't own skates that's one less thing to sort out, and if they do have their own quad or inline skates they're welcome to bring them along. Protective gear, helmets, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, comes free too, which is decent given a rink full of wobbly beginners is exactly where you want padding.
It suits younger kids well, the site lists ages up to 12, and the team's on hand to help beginners find their feet rather than leaving them to it. There's no formal lessons though, so don't expect a coach, just friendly pointers as you go. Sessions are walk-in with no booking, which is handy on a whim but means a popular Sunday slot could be busier than you'd like.
Food and drink have to stay off the rink floor, fair enough given the last thing you want is a spilled juice under someone's wheels, but there's a seating area for spectators and refreshments on site so parents watching from the sidelines aren't stuck standing about. Parking's free at Ardwick Sports Centre, which takes one worry off the list.
Worth knowing there are no lockers, so valuables need to stay with you or a spectator, and it's your own risk if something goes missing. Private parties aren't running at the moment either, so this is one for a regular session rather than a birthday booking for now.
