What it’s like

A free contemporary art gallery in Manchester where you can wander round paintings and mixed-media work with the kids in tow.

This is a proper gallery rather than a hands-on kids' attraction, so what you're doing is walking round looking at contemporary paintings and mixed-media pieces together. It suits a quiet browse more than a big day out, and it's free to get in, which makes it an easy add-on rather than something you have to plan the whole day around.

Hours are generous. Weekdays it's open 9am to 6pm, and at weekends it stretches to 10am till 7pm, so there's no need to rush across town to catch it before closing. There's no booking system.

Don't expect activity sheets or a play corner, this is contemporary art on the walls and that's it. If your kids are the sort who'll happily point at a painting and tell you what they think it means, twenty minutes here can genuinely work. If they need something to touch or climb, it's probably a stop on the way to somewhere else rather than the main event.

Plan your visit

How much does it cost?

Nothing, entry is free.

Do we need to book ahead?

No, there's no booking link, so you just turn up during opening hours.

What are the opening hours?

Monday to Friday it's 9am to 6pm. Weekends it runs a bit later, 10am to 7pm.

What will the kids actually do there?

Mainly browsing, looking at paintings and mixed-media pieces by contemporary artists. It's a look-don't-touch kind of visit.
