What it’s like
Free contemporary art exhibitions in the city centre, with lifts to every floor if you've got a buggy or a wheelchair.
It's a free gallery, so there's no ticket faff, no booking, just turn up between Wednesday and Sunday and see what's on the walls. The shows change, and the gallery says it closes between exhibitions. When there is a show up, it's contemporary art, which won't be everyone's idea of a quiet hour with the kids, but it's a decent option if you want somewhere calm and free in the middle of Manchester.
There's a lift to all floors and an accessible toilet on the first floor, so buggies and wheelchairs aren't an afterthought here. It's a five-minute walk to the nearest all-day car park, and that'll cost you £17 for 24 hours, which stings for what might be a half-hour look round. Street parking nearby is the cheaper option if you can find a space. If you're coming by tram, Deansgate-Castlefield stop is close, and there's a railway station and the free Metroshuttle bus too if you fancy skipping the car altogether.
It's open Wednesday to Sunday, midday to half five, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Given it's free and indoors, it's an easy one to fold into a wet afternoon in town, especially if you're already near Deansgate for something else.
