What it’s like

Free entry to a neo-Gothic library packed with rare books, manuscripts and a working antique printing press.

This one's a building first, exhibits second, at least for the first five minutes. The neo-Gothic architecture is the sort of thing that makes kids go quiet and look up, which is not nothing. Once you're past that, there are rare books and manuscripts on display, a Colombian printing press demonstration to watch, and Rare Reads sessions where you get up close to genuinely old objects rather than just squinting at them through glass.

It's free, which is the whole point really. Wednesday to Saturday, 10 till 5, last entry at 20 to 5, so don't roll up at quarter to expecting to get in. There's no booking link listed, so it sounds like you just turn up. The Rylands Discovery Tours and special exhibitions add a bit more structure if you want to make an afternoon of it rather than a quick wander.

The catch is food. No food or drink allowed anywhere in the building, only bottled water, so this isn't the place for a lunch stop with a fractious toddler. There's no parking on site either, you're looking at NCP car parks on Watson Street, New Quay Street or Blackfriars Street, or the free bus from Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations if you're coming by train. The gift shop is card only, so leave the coin jar at home.

It's fully accessible, with lift access to every floor bar the historic entrance area, and a RADAR key available for the accessible toilet. Given the no-food rule and the quiet, hushed feel of the place, this reads more like an outing for older kids curious about old books and grand buildings than somewhere a toddler will happily sit still for.
