What it’s like

An indoor skatepark under the Mancunian Way flyover with open sessions, coaching and toddler-only slots for beginners on wheels.

This is a proper skatepark, not a soft play with a couple of ramps bolted on. Open sessions are uncoached and welcome all abilities, so if your kid already knows what a kickflip is they can just get on with it, and if they don't, the weekend coaching classes for ages 5 to 16 are there to sort that out. There's also a Toddler Takeover on Fridays for the under-5s, which is a decent shout if you want to see whether a three-year-old actually likes skateboarding before you buy a board they'll abandon in a fortnight.

The timetable does a lot of the work here. Board Mums runs free in term time, there's a Women & Girls session on Thursdays, and Wednesday nights are handed over to adults only, so it's not just a drop-in for kids with a bored parent in the corner. Weekday passes are £10 for under-18s, weekend passes creep up to £11, and a month pass is £50 with 10% off in the shop and free equipment hire thrown in, which starts to look sensible if you're going more than once a week.

Coaching sessions include the board, helmet and pads. The café does proper coffee and homemade cakes, and there's indoor seating if you want to watch rather than skate yourself. It's fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift up to the balcony viewing platform if you'd rather watch from above the noise.

Birthday parties get a lesson and a free skate for £225, but food isn't provided. Getting there by car is the fiddly bit: parking on site is very limited, and the site's own directions send you round via Travis Street and Baring Street, where there's pay and display if you don't fancy the walk from further out.
