What it’s like
Goats, Highland coos and Shetland ponies to feed, plus a play barn for when the drizzle sets in.
This is a proper working farm with a play barn bolted on, so your kids get both: goats and sheep to feed, Highland cattle and Shetland ponies to gawp at, and an indoor barn plus outdoor play yard for when they've had enough of animals or the weather's turned. There are animal shows three times a day, at 11, 1:30 and 3, which is worth building your visit around if you want to catch one. The Nature Detective trail and Pick Your Own fruit give you something to do beyond the pens too.
You have to book ahead, every single visitor, which is a bit of a faff if you're the spontaneous type, but it does mean you're not turning up to a heaving car park. Weekday off-peak is the better deal at £5 for an adult and £7 for a child, or £20 for a family ticket. Turn up on a Saturday or Sunday and it jumps to £7, £9 and £28, so the weekend premium is real. Parking's free either way.
Food works through an app at your table, no need to book ahead for that bit, and they do gluten-free, vegan and veggie options if you ask. The one rule to know before you go is that it's a nut-free site, so no packed lunches in the play barn beyond baby food and formula, which they'll warm up for you. Around two hours is what they reckon for a visit, and that feels about right for a one-year-old just as much as a four-year-old who wants to see everything twice.
It's ground-floor accessible throughout the café, play barn and outdoor areas, with accessible toilets too, though some of the raised play bits are out of reach for wheelchairs. Dogs aren't allowed in with the animals or in play areas unless they're guide dogs, but there's a small outdoor canine café if you've brought the family dog along for the ride.
