What it’s like
Drop-in meditation classes and a second-Saturday Kids Club at a Buddhist centre open most days from 11am to 4pm.
This is a working Buddhist meditation centre, so the main business is guided meditation classes and courses rather than anything built around children. That said, there's a Kids Club every second Saturday at 10.30am, and it's worth building a visit around if your children are curious about sitting still and breathing rather than climbing something.
For adults, the courses are the real reason to go. Create the Life You Want is £20 (free if you're a member), and the Less Stress, More Joy workshop is the same price and pitch, a couple of hours aimed at people who want practical tools rather than a lecture. The 3 Principal Aspects of the Path Retreat is £35, with members paying just £5 for lunch, which suggests it runs long enough to need feeding you.
Drop-in opening hours are Saturday to Wednesday, 11am to 4pm, and the centre is also open around its evening classes, pujas and events. It closes to casual visitors on Thursdays and Fridays, so don't turn up on spec those two days. School groups, Scouts, Guides and corporate teams can arrange bespoke sessions tailored to what they want, either at the centre or at their own venue, which is handy if you're organising for a group rather than a single family.
Getting there by tram or bus is straightforward, with the nearest stop at Balfour Street. Parking is tight during the week, disabled parking at the rear is free, and on-street parking is free at weekends and after 5.30pm, so a weekend visit is the easier one logistically as well as programme-wise.
