What it’s like

Free, no-ticket wander round an art gallery inside the Botanic Garden, an easy add-on rather than a full day out.

This is the gallery inside Edinburgh's Botanic Garden, so what you're getting is walls of changing exhibitions rather than anything to climb on or press buttons at. It suits a family who fancy a quiet look round art on the way to or from the gardens outside, more than a destination in its own right for kids who need something to do with their hands.

Getting in costs nothing, which is the best thing about it if you're not sure your child will last more than twenty minutes inside before wanting to be back out among the trees. Hours move with the seasons: 10am to 5pm through spring, summer and autumn, dropping back to 4pm in November and January and cutting off at 3.30pm in December, so a winter visit gives you a narrower window than you might plan around. It's shut on 25 December and 1 January, and in properly rough weather the wider garden can close too.

There's no ticket to sort in advance and nothing on the site about booking, so you just turn up during opening hours. Parking is metered on-street near West Gate on Arboretum Place, with Blue Badge spaces along the same road, and every venue space is wheelchair accessible, so a buggy shouldn't cause you any bother getting round.
