What it’s like

A free medieval gatehouse and grounds to explore, with a rooftop viewing gallery you climb a spiral stair to reach.

You wander the medieval gatehouse and castle grounds on a pre-booked tour, then work your way up to the roof for a viewing gallery that looks out over Hylton Dene. It's free to get in, which is rare for somewhere with this much stone and history, but you do have to book ahead rather than just turning up.

The tours lean into the history and geography of the place, with activities pitched at learning rather than just looking, so it suits kids who are happy to listen to a guide for a bit rather than ones who want to run about a soft play frame. Afterwards there's Hylton Dene itself, the green space around the castle, which gives everyone somewhere to stretch their legs once the tour's done.

One thing to flag: the roof gallery is only reachable by a stone spiral staircase, no lift, so if you've got a buggy or anyone with mobility issues, that bit of the visit isn't for them. The lift covers every other floor, and the castle and gardens are accessible straight from the car park, but some of the wider grounds are steep. Parking's free on site with disabled bays if you need them.

There's a tearoom for light snacks and hot drinks, but only Wednesday to Saturday, 11:30am to 2:30pm, so time your visit around that if lunch matters. Because the castle doubles as a community venue, it doesn't run to fixed daily opening hours, it's more a case of checking what's on and booking your slot, whether that's a tour, an event, Heritage Open Days or an afternoon tea.
