What it’s like

Free rhyme time for babies, craft sessions for kids up to 11, and a crime fiction book club, all under one roof and free to join.

Babies and toddlers get Rattle, Rhyme and Roll, a relaxed half hour of songs and rhymes that won't test anyone's patience if you've got a wriggly one-year-old. It's free, it's short, and it's the sort of low-stakes outing that works when a soft play trip feels like too much admin.

For the four to elevens there's Crafty Tuesdays, proper art activities rather than a colouring sheet shoved at them, and a parent or carer needs to stick around for it. There's also a standing Board Games and Colouring session if your child would rather sit and build a tower of Jenga than commit to painting. None of it costs anything, which for a wet Tuesday afternoon is hard to argue with.

Adults get their own reason to go: a Crime Café book group on the first Wednesday of the month, and a Places of Welcome drop-in every Monday afternoon if you fancy sitting somewhere friendly with a book and not much agenda. The building itself is wheelchair-friendly inside and out, and there's free two-hour parking right at the Market Place out front if you don't fancy the walk from the train stop.

Opening hours are fairly standard library hours, Monday to Saturday, shut on Sundays, and Tuesday's the long day if you need a later slot. It's not a big day out on its own, but stacked with a park trip or a rainy morning it earns its place.
