What it’s like
Free drop-in sessions for babies, toddlers and school-age kids, from rhyme time to Lego Club, in a library with a café for afterwards.
Rattle, Rhyme and Roll is the one to build a Tuesday morning around if you've got a baby or toddler. It runs in term-time and it's free, which counts for a lot when you're testing out whether your two-year-old can sit still for ten minutes (they mostly can't, that's fine).
For school-age kids there's Lego Club on Saturdays, 1 to 3pm, aimed at four-year-olds and up, and Board Games Club on Thursdays after school, 3:30 to 4:30pm. Storytime happens once a month, on the third Monday. None of it needs booking ahead from what they say, so you can turn up on the day and see who's about.
Beyond the sessions, it's a proper working library: books in other languages, a local studies collection, and a microfiche machine if anyone's doing family history homework. There's free wifi and public PCs too, and a café doing hot drinks and biscuits, which is exactly what you want after Lego Club has run its course.
Opening hours are weekdays 9:30 to 5, Saturday 9:30 to 4, and it's closed Sunday, so a Saturday morning session followed by lunch is about the only way to fit everything in over a weekend.
