What it’s like

Weekly painting sessions where you or your child work through different techniques with a free taster class before you commit.

You turn up, pick up a brush and work through a proper painting technique rather than just splashing colour about. Sessions run two hours for adults and an hour and a half for under-12s, and the site describes it as covering different types of paintings, techniques and materials rather than one fixed project each week.

Before you pay anything, you get a free first session to see the studio and have a go at a simple piece step by step, which is a decent way to check it clicks before signing up. After that it's £30 for a one-off session on your own or £50 for a parent and child together, or you can go monthly at £65 for one person or £110 for two siblings or a parent and child. That monthly route only makes sense if you know you'll keep going, because payment is by standing order rather than pay-as-you-go, and if you cancel for a holiday and want back in later there's a £50 rejoining fee. That's a faff worth knowing about before you sign up.

Sessions run Thursday through Saturday in two-hour blocks, with Saturday mornings starting at 10am and Thursdays running right through from midday to 8pm. Booking is required, so this isn't a walk-in studio. The studio also closes for two weeks at Christmas, a week at Easter and two weeks in August, so it's not quite a year-round weekly habit.
