What it’s like

Ropeless rock climbing over soft padding, with routes pitched from total beginners to confident climbers, from age 6 up.

Bouldering means no ropes and no harness, just you, the wall and thick padding underneath if you slip off. Routes here are graded for all abilities, so a six-year-old having their first go and a confident teenager can both find something to struggle with. There's a dedicated kids' area for the younger ones, mixing fun bouldering with games rather than pure technical climbing, and staff make a point of saying nobody has to reach the top if they don't fancy it.

You book a slot in advance through their online system, but that's really just to tell reception when you're arriving, once you're in you can climb for as long as you like. Pay-online prices are £14 for an adult and £8.50 for under-14s, and if anyone in your group hasn't climbed regularly in the last year, the £25 Intro to Bouldering session is worth doing first rather than working it out as you go. Hire shoes are £3.50 (£2 for under-14s) but they warn demand can outstrip supply, so bring your own clean trainers as backup rather than risk it.

It's a converted warehouse, which means the café doing homemade food and proper coffee is a genuine plus after all that climbing, but also means it runs cold in winter and warm in summer, worth knowing if you're the type who feels it. Wednesday to Friday between 10am and 5pm outside school holidays is their quiet window, useful if your group includes a nervous first-timer who'd rather not climb around a crowd.

Birthday parties get an hour of bouldering plus half an hour in a party room, £100 for up to six people or £200 for up to twelve, though they don't do food for parties so you'll need to sort snacks yourself. On-site parking has 42 spaces including two disabled bays, and it's card only across the centre.

Plan your visit

What age can kids start climbing?

Six is the minimum, whether they're with an instructor or a competent adult.

How much does it cost?

£14 for an adult and £8.50 for under-14s if you book online, with concessions at £12. Shoe hire is £3.50, or £2 for under-14s.

Do we need to book?

All sessions are booked in advance through their system, with slots released a week ahead. Booking a slot just tells reception when you're arriving, it doesn't cap how long you stay.

Is it OK for a first-timer who's never climbed?

The Intro to Bouldering session, £25, is aimed at exactly that and they recommend it if you haven't climbed regularly in the last year. Staff say nobody has to climb higher than they're comfortable with.

What if my child is scared of heights?

Bouldering routes stay under 4 metres with padding below, and climbers only go as high as they choose. Most people forget the nerves once they get started.

Should we hire shoes there or bring our own?

Hire shoes are available but demand is high and not guaranteed, so bring clean trainers as a backup just in case.

What about food?

There's an on-site café doing homemade food, sweet and savoury snacks, and speciality coffee. Card only, so no cash.

When's quietest?

Wednesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, outside school holidays tends to be calmer.

Can we do a birthday party there?

Yes, £100 for up to six people or £200 for up to twelve, with an hour of bouldering and half an hour in a party room. No food is provided for parties, so bring your own snacks.

Is there parking?

42 on-site spaces including two disabled bays.

How long can we stay once we're in?

As long as you want. Your booked slot just marks your arrival time, not a cut-off.

Do climbers need to be fit already?

The routes are designed for all abilities and fitness levels, so there's something manageable whatever your starting point.
