What it’s like

A free wooded nature reserve for wildlife spotting and quiet walks, with parking on site.

This is a spot for slowing right down. Paths wind through the woods along the old claypits, and the whole point is to look rather than rush: birds, invertebrates, whatever mammals you're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of. It's free to get in, which makes it an easy one to add to a weekend without any planning.

There's no big attraction to march towards here, no café at the end of the path, just the walk itself and the wildlife you spot along the way. That suits younger kids who like pottering and pointing things out more than it suits older ones after a big adrenaline hit. Bring your own binoculars if you've got them, since spotting the smaller stuff is half the fun.

Parking is free on site, so you're not stuck feeding a meter while you work out which bird you just heard. It's an outdoor visit through and through, so a dry day makes the paths a lot more pleasant underfoot.
