What it’s like

Woodland trails, a fairy trail and farm animal meet-ups on an estate that's open every day of the year.

There's a proper mix of things to wander into here. The Forest Fairy Trail is the one small kids latch onto, tucked into the woodland walks alongside tumbling waterfalls that are worth building the whole route around. There are imaginative play areas dotted about too, and the Ark brings actual animal experiences into the mix, which tends to be the bit that gets talked about on the drive home.

The estate itself is open 10am to 5pm daily, so this isn't a place with a last-entry scramble. The Visitor Centre, gift shop and tea room keep their own shorter hours (the tea room shuts earlier in winter, 11am to 3pm rather than the summer 10am to 4pm), so if food is the plan, build your visit around that rather than the other way round. Ranger-led activities run too, which is a nice way to get a bit more structure into a woodland walk if your kids need a task rather than just a view.

Picnics and barbecues are properly welcome, with several spots that have built-in BBQs and some with log cabins, so you could genuinely make a day of it rather than a there-and-back walk. Dogs are welcome as well, on the lead in gardens and play areas. The gardens are fully accessible for wheelchairs and buggies, but the Yellow Trail isn't, the terrain rules it out, so if you're pushing a pram check which route you're on before you commit to it.

Birthday parties happen here too, built around a Farm Animal Experience or a Ranger Activity, with up to 15 kids getting two hours in the Old Laundry Building plus the play area. It's a different sort of party to a soft play unit and probably a better story for the thank-you cards.

Plan your visit

What are the opening hours?

The estate itself is open 10am to 5pm every day. The Visitor Centre and tea room keep shorter, seasonal hours, so those are worth timing separately from your walk.

Is it OK for buggies and wheelchairs?

The gardens are fully accessible. The Yellow Trail isn't suitable for wheelchairs or buggies because of the terrain, and you'll want a bit of care on the Red Trail and around the play areas too.

Can we bring the dog?

Dogs are very welcome. Keep them on the lead in the gardens and play areas and clean up after them.

Can we have a picnic or a barbecue?

Picnics and barbecues are welcome, with several outdoor spots that have built-in BBQs and some with log cabins. You can also book the Old Laundry Building, East Barn or West Barn if you want somewhere covered.

Do you do birthday parties?

Yes, built around a Farm Animal Experience or a Ranger Activity, for up to 15 kids. You get two hours of the Old Laundry Building plus the play area, and you'd call or email to arrange it.

What is there for kids to do?

Woodland walks, the Forest Fairy Trail, waterfalls to find, imaginative play areas and animal experiences at the Ark. Ranger-led activities run as well if you want something more organised.

Is there anywhere to eat?

There's a tea room on site, open 10am to 4pm in summer and 11am to 3pm in winter. Outside those hours you're relying on your own picnic.
