What it’s like

Real rock climbing, caving and abseiling out in the Peak District, with sessions built around your group rather than a fixed timetable.

This isn't a climbing wall in a warehouse. Gritstone takes you and the kids out into the Peak District National Park itself for climbing, caving, abseiling, mountain biking, trekking and orienteering, on the actual rock and in the actual caves that make the area famous for this stuff. From what they say, they pick the venue to suit your group's ability, so a first-timer of three and a confident nine-year-old can both be looked after on the same trip.

There's no fixed price list and no online booking, which is a bit of a faff if you like to sort everything at midnight in your pyjamas. Instead you email or call and they build the day around you, deciding how long you're out for and what mix of activities makes sense. Group climbing activities start from £45, and equipment is included, so you're not turning up needing your own harness and helmet.

Because sessions are tailor made, you can do a half day if a full day feels like too much for a three-year-old's attention span, or stretch it over multiple days if you're keen. They're used to first-timers and mixed-ability groups, and they also do school visits, so this works as well for a family booking as it does for a scout group or a class trip. Caving and weaselling is the one that'll get talked about at school on Monday, squeezing through tight, dark spaces underground is not something most kids get to do on a normal weekend.

Do bear in mind this is proper outdoor activity in the Peak District. If your family is after a gentle introduction to the outdoors rather than a soft play afternoon, this is built for exactly that.

How much does it cost?

Group climbing activities start from £45. There's no fixed price list beyond that, as the cost depends on what you book and for how long.

How do we book?

You email or phone them directly rather than booking online. They say they reply the same day and will talk through what suits your group.

Is it suitable for young kids?

The minimum age is 3, and they say they cater for all abilities, from small children with families up to adult technical courses. Activities get tailored to the mix of ages and experience in your group.

Do we need our own gear?

No, all equipment is included in the price. You just need to turn up ready for the outdoors.

Can we do a shorter session?

They say the duration can be as short or as long as you like, with the price adjusted to match. Multiple day bookings are also possible.
