What it’s like

Guided hill walking, rock climbing, scrambling and skyline challenge walks in the Peak District, with proper instructors, not a self-guided course.

This isn't a fixed high ropes park you turn up to and queue for. It's instructor-led adventure: hill walking, rock climbing, bouldering and scrambling courses, plus bigger challenge events like the 9 Edges Challenge Walk and the SkyNine Challenge if you fancy a proper day on the hills. There are adventure camps for children and family adventure days too, so it covers a lot more than a straight climbing wall would.

Ages are flexible but there's a structure to it. Under 11s can only come on privately booked days with a parent or family friend, or on the Adventure Camps. 11 to 17s can do private instruction or the camps. Standard summer skills courses need you to be 15 or over, and winter courses or overseas trips are 18 plus. Worth sorting out which category your child falls into before you book anything, because it changes what's actually on offer.

Prices reflect the private, guided nature of it all. The 9 Edges Challenge Walk starts things off at £55, the SkyNine Challenge is £110, and if you want the big one, the Challenge Abseil comes in at £250. This is a day out you plan and pay for properly, not something you drop into on a whim.

They work out of the Anglers Rest in the Peak District, a community pub with views over the valley that also does decent food, and parking there is free. Rain doesn't stop things either: waterproofs and carry on if you're walking, a dry-place theory session if you're climbing, and only a reschedule if it's genuinely biblical out there. One thing to flag if you're a dog owner, they don't allow dogs on courses, out of fairness to people with allergies or who aren't keen.

How much does it cost?

It starts at £55 for the 9 Edges Challenge Walk, £110 for the SkyNine Challenge, and £250 for the Challenge Abseil. These are private, guided events rather than pay-on-the-day activities.

Can children take part?

Under 11s can come on privately booked days with a parent or on Adventure Camps. 11 to 17s can do private instruction or camps, and standard summer courses need you to be 15 or older.

Is there parking?

Free parking at the Anglers Rest in the Peak District, where most courses run from. Camper vans can stay overnight there too, either eating at Sir William or paying £15.

What happens if it rains?

Walking courses just carry on with waterproofs on. Climbing days switch to theory in a dry space, and only proper flooding gets you a reschedule.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs aren't allowed on courses, so people with allergies or who aren't keen can still join in comfortably.

Is there food nearby?

The Anglers Rest is a community pub with decent food and views over the valley, right where the Peak District courses are based.
