What it’s like
A guided walk through Glasgow Central's hidden vaults, catacombs and a disused Victorian platform, not a trip for younger kids.
This one's for the older kids, the ones who actually want to know what's under the floor of a working station. You're led through restricted areas most passengers never see: vaults, catacombs, and a disused Victorian platform that's been sitting there since the station outgrew it. It's a proper history lesson dressed up as an adventure, and the guides clearly know their stuff.
The minimum age is 12, and if your teenager's coming along you'll need to stick close, since 12 to 15 year olds must be accompanied by an adult, with a maximum of three kids per grown-up. Everyone needs photographic ID on them, which feels like a faff for a family day out but makes sense once you remember you're walking through parts of a live station. Sturdy shoes only, no sandals or heels, and you'll be given safety clothing to wear for the tour.
It runs about an hour and a half and covers a fair bit of ground, walking for over an hour with stairs and inclines along the way, though there are rest breaks built in. It's not suitable for wheelchair users or anyone with limited mobility, and that's worth knowing before you commit two people's worth of a non-refundable £18 ticket. There aren't any toilets on the route itself, just the public ones back near the meeting point, so it's worth a stop before you head off.
At £18 a head it's not a cheap outing, and tickets are non-refundable, though you can reschedule via the confirmation email as long as it's outside 48 hours of the date. Dates get released a month at a time, so if you've got your eye on a school holiday slot, don't leave it too late.
