What it’s like
A free wander round a ruined 15th-century tower house, a museum and an adventure playground on the edge of Kilsyth.
The playground is what most kids will head for first, but the real oddity here is the tower house remains sitting right there for them to poke about in. There's no fee for any of it, which makes it an easy one to slot into a free afternoon without the usual "is it worth the money" debate.
The house and museum are the catch. They're not normally open, so if you want to actually get inside rather than just look at the outside, you'd need to sort a prior appointment. Turning up on spec means you get the grounds, the playground and the 15th-century remains, but not a look round the museum itself.
It's open every day, 10:30am to 3pm, which is a tighter window than a lot of places offer, so this isn't one for a lazy late-morning start. There's a café on site and free parking, plus blue badge parking and wheelchair access if that matters to your group.
Given the short hours and the free entry, it feels like a stop rather than a full day out, something to pair with another Kilsyth plan rather than build a whole visit around.
