What it’s like

Bouldering and top-rope climbing on 8m walls at The Castle, plus outdoor rock climbing, for kids aged 9 and up.

This one's for the older kids, not the toddlers dragging you round a soft play. From nine upwards they're on proper 8m walls, doing bouldering and top-rope climbing at The Castle Climbing Centre, with outdoor climbing on real rocks and boulders on offer too if you want to take it outside the building.

Birthday parties run Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, an hour and a half long. It's £249 for up to six children or £399 for seven to twelve, which isn't pocket change, and there's no on-site catering to soften the blow. The site's upfront that the Castle café is too small and too busy to rely on for a party crowd, so you'll want your own plan for food and cake.

You have to book and pay in advance, and if you need to cancel you get a refund only if it's seven or more days out, minus a £40 admin fee. Worth reading that twice before you commit. Parking at the venue is limited, and the car park next door locks its gates at 4pm on weekends, which catches people out if a party runs long or you fancy hanging about afterwards.

There's a café and picnic area on site, toilets including an accessible one and baby change, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on a lead and kept clear of the growing beds. It's an odd mix of family-friendly extras attached to what's really a climbing centre for kids old enough to take instruction seriously.

Plan your visit

What age is this suitable for?

Nine and up. The climbing is proper bouldering and top-rope work on 8m walls, so it needs kids who can follow instruction.

How much is a birthday party?

£249 for one to six children, £399 for seven to twelve. Parties run Saturday and Sunday afternoons only, for an hour and a half.

Do we need to book?

You need to book and pay in advance. Cancel with seven or more days' notice and you get a refund minus a £40 admin fee.

Is there food at the party?

There's no catering on-site for parties. The Castle café is too small and too busy to lean on for a group, so bring your own food and cake.

Is parking easy?

Parking at the venue is limited. The car park next door locks its gates at 4pm on weekends, so don't plan on staying late.

Can we bring a dog?

Dogs are allowed on-lead, kept away from the growing beds.
